This is the wonder of living in a free, prosperous, mostly capitalistic world. Different people can make different choices that work for them. Someone who wants to make us a multi-planetary civilization can be hard core at SpaceX working 80+ hours a week--and they have my appreciation and immense gratitude. Others like you and I can choose family and still make a decent living and have fulfilling work!

Yes, Heike, exactly! We have capitalism (and technology) to thank for that. the way it's flexible and non-prescriptive is both a blessing and a curse in a way, isn't it? You're left to decide for yourself, and if you're not attentive, you might make the wrong decision and think you made the right one for you. Thanks for dropping your thought as a comment!

That last allegory with the rearview really hit home. It's admirable to have this 100% conviction in the values. The trouble is when there is even a 1% doubt...

Oh yes, and do we ever not have that 1% doubt? Maybe the few lucky ones don't... but for me, I always have a dose of doubt. Is this the right decision?? Cue thoughts like 'If I stick it out for a couple of years (or "chiong," as we say in Singapore 😉), I might make it out with enough money to retire early!'
